Envelope FAQ for Qube Users

Updated this week

We know many of you are here because of Qube’s partner-bank transition. Envelope is not here to capitalize on anyone’s struggles. We’re here to offer a stable, transparent, and supportive home for people who need a place to manage their family budget. Due to an overwhelming amount of outreach on our Reddit, Discord, and customer support portals, we decided to put together this FAQ for Qube users interested in Envelope.

Getting Started

How do I open an Envelope account?

Download the Envelope app (iOS or Android). If you previously had an account and closed it, email [email protected] to reopen instead of creating a new one.

Bank Partner & Stability

Who provides Envelope's banking services?

Envelope offers banking services through our partner, Pacific West Bank (PWB).

How stable is Envelope compared to Qube?

  • We just negotiatied our contract with Pacific West Bank for another two years.

  • We have over six years of runway based on current funding and growth.

  • Envelope has already reached a scale comparable to where Qube was — and we’re growing rapidly.

  • Trusted by thousands of households who have run their finances on Envelope for years.

  • Backed by Y Combinator, one of the most recognized startup accelerators in the world.

  • We’ve been live with PWB for two years, and the partnership is strong. You’ll even see PWB employees weigh in on our Discord.

Envelope isn’t a tiny startup experiment. We’re an established, growing platform with the stability, backing, and scale to support you long term.

Does the Envelope team understand partner bank volatility?

Envelope was started by several users who were caught in the Simple banking product shutdown. We know how difficult it is to move your family's financial life, and we are incredibly sorry you are caught in this turmoil. We're here to offer a stable, transparent, and supportive home for anyone who needs it.

How would Envelope handle potential partner bank issues?

Envelope already went through a partner bank migration in 2023. We moved from Evolve Bank & Trust to our current partner, Pacific West Bank. The transition was seamless for our users: they could choose the most convenient time within a six-week window to migrate, while all money movement happened behind the scenes. From their perspective, it was as simple as tapping one in-app button to move their account.

Features

Does Envelope work like Qube's "open before you swipe"?

Not exactly. You can think of the basic envelope experience as the entire account operating like "Qubeless". New transactions post to "Available," then you assign them to envelopes. We then give you the ability to "Always" assign. See the "Bob's Burgers → Fun money" example below. Most spending is automatic after setup.

We also just launched two features to add more friction and restrictions to your spending: Auto-lock and Envelope Cards. Auto-lock allows you to leave your physical card in a default locked state-- requiring you to check your Envelopes and unlock the card before each swipe. You can turn this off or on in the card section of the app. Envelope cards allows you to issue a virtual card for every Envelope. This limits spending to the balance in the Envelope and doesn't allow your "Available" balance to go negative.

What happens if I have $0 in "Available" but money in envelopes?

The transaction still goes through. "Available" will show negative until you assign it to an envelope. This prevents important bills from getting declined at night. If your total balance is $0, the transaction is declined.

I'm used to opening Qube each time I swipe, can I mimic the same behavior in Envelope?

You don't need to choose an envelope before swiping your card. However, we just launched an optional feature called Auto-lock. This will keep your physical card in a default locked state.

Can each envelope have a virtual card?

YES! With our latest update, you can now add a per-envelope virtual card.

Do you offer High-Yield Savings?

Yes. You'll see it in-app as a "Protected savings" envelope. You can move money in/out instantly, but you can't swipe directly from it—on purpose, to protect savings.

Transfers & Payments

What's the fastest way to move money in?

Push funds into Envelope from your Qube account: often same day if you hit ACH cutoffs. Navigate to your linked bank accounts in the Qube app and select to "Link Another Bank Account," Select the "Instant" option, Search "Envelope" and proceed with the two factor authentication.

After that, your account should be instantly connected and you can kick off your transfer.

Early direct deposit?

Yes—often up to 2 days early, depending on your employer.

Checks and cash?

Mobile check deposit is available in-app. Cash withdrawals are free at 55,000+ Allpoint ATMs. Cash deposit is available at Allpoint+ ATMs. Allpoint ATM locator

Costs & Fees

Is there an annual fee?

Yes, there is a $40 annual fee, charged after your 30-day trial. If you spend $5,000/year on your debit card (physical, online, or Apple/Google Pay) your upcoming membership fee gets waived. ACH transfers and debit card transfers don't count towards waiving the fee.

ATM fees?

No fees at Allpoint ATMs—no reimbursements required.

Support & Community

How responsive is support?

You'll usually hear back within minutes to hours at [email protected].

Is there a community?

Yes—our Discord is active and helpful, with Qube refugees, Simple veterans, long-time Envelope members, and even employees from our partner bank chiming in. We're also active on r/envelope Reddit.

Founding Story

Who's behind Envelope?

Envelope was founded by Katelyn and Josh, a married co-founder team. Josh was one of the iOS engineers at Robinhood. Katelyn led marketing for brands like Apple Card, Acorns, and Digit. Both were loyal Simple customers. When Simple shut down, they lost the bank they trusted and didn't see a platform they felt safe parking their money in. They left their fintech jobs in San Francisco to build the product they wanted for their family and yours. They were accepted into Y Combinator (a top startup accelerator) and launched Envelope. After two years live with Pacific West Bank, the partnership has proven exceptional. We're builders, budgeters, and parents—just like you.
